As we enter the new year 2015, here is a post on some of the happenings in Wailea, and some of the upcoming events on Maui. Wishing you all a happy and properous New Year!

Wailea Community Association Annual Meeting

Don’t forget the WCA Annual meeting is around the corner. March 6, 2015. It will be held at the Andaz Wailea Resort once again.   Registration and continental breakfast start at 8 followed by the meeting at 9. The meeting usually lasts from 1 to 1 ½ hours. This meeting is for all WCA members in good standing and will provide the status of the association and updated with what is happening in Wailea. Members will receive a packet in the mail in January.

New Developments in Wailea

 The MF-11 Condo project Keala O Wailea received its County approval November 25th. It is located adjacent to the Wailea Gateway Center. This extraordinary luxury condominium development will have stunning views of the south Maui coastline and Ma’alaea Bay. The MF-15 project Makali’i At Wailea got its approval October 15th and its WCA approval in July. This project is located mauka (towards the mountains) of the Fairmont Kea Lani Hotel Both projects will begin sometime mid 2015.

 Wailea Residence Inn – If you are driving down Wailea Ike you will notice the site work on the new hotel is well under way. Although slightly behind schedule, it will soon be on track.

 The Shops at Wailea –

The highly anticipated Country Market is behind schedule with opening sometime in late May. Prada will be coming soon and located in the East Wing. There will be an upscale gastro pub named Pint & Cork leasing the space of the former Kai Wailea. Opening will take place sometime before August.

Superstore Quicksilver has opened their new 6,500 s.f. store, second in size to the Waikiki store at 8,000 s.f. This store combines all Quicksilver, Roxy, Waterman and DC products under one roof.  It will also have an 8 -foot wall of GoPro and accessories, and will be the largest retail distributor of GoPro on Maui.

Wailea Le’a– The Shops at Wailea Fountain Courtyard – Jon Cruz will be performing in February and in March, the featured artist will be Kuana Torres Kahele.

Hyundai Golf Championship

January 8-12th

Hyundai Golf Championship will take place from January 8 through the 12th. This season’s opening event of the 2015 PGA Tour will be held at the Plantation Course designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. For a very good cause you can get tickets to attend. A ticket for a one-time entry any day is $20. For all 5 days, with an entry ticket per day, total cost is $50. These ticket sales will benefit the Malama Family Recovery Center. Maui Oceanfront Marathon

January 18

This Marathon starts in Wailea, goes through Kihei and along the oceanfront all the way to Kamehameha Iki Park (near the banyan tree in Lahaina). (808) 344-3651

This race benefits each of the non-profits organizations that tend each mile of the race course, providing aid stations, entertainment, course monitors, coning, etc. Bib chip timing will be used. The Marathon is a point to point race starting in Wailea at 5:30 a.m. The Marathon Walk is same course and has a one hour head start. The Half Marathon (13.1 miles) is an out and back oceanfront course starting at the Marathon oceanfront finish line at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. The Maui 15K (9.3 miles) is point to point oceanfront from Papalau Beach to Lahaina. The Maui 10K (6.2 miles) is an out and back oceanfront course starting at the Marathon finish line at Kamehameha Iki Park in Lahaina. The Maui 5K run and non-competitive walk or jog starts at the 23.1 mark on the marathon course. Join the Race Director and staff for a post race private sunset cruise on the Pride of Maui. www.RunMaui.com

 

Run and Walk For The Whales

January 31, 2015

Pacific Whale Foundation’s Run & Walk for the Whales is one of the largest fun runs and walking events on Maui. The race includes a 2.5 mile walk, 5K run, 10K run and half marathon run. This fundraiser supports humpback whale research, as well as marine education and conservation. The Run & Walk begins and ends at Maalaea Harbor Shops, and includes live entertainment by local recording artist Marty Dread. Participants will also enjoy a post-race continental breakfast, tours of Pacific Whale Foundation’s facilities, discounted whalewatch tickets and a commemorative t-shirt. The Run & Walk for the Whales also includes professional chip timing for runners, Gatorade aid stations, plus free massages from the Maui School of Therapeutic Massage. This event is part of the Maui Whale Festival that also includes World Whale Day on February 14 and the Great Whale Count on February 21. An Evening with Yo-Yo Ma

January 22, Thursday 7:30 pm

This performance at the Maui Arts and Culture Center, Castle Theater on Maui will be Yo-Yo Ma’s only concert in Hawaii. He is one of the finest cellists of his generation. The concert will be an all Bach program and will include Suite #1 in G Major, Suite #3 in C Major and Suite #5 in C Minor. Maui Arts & Cultural Center (808) 242-7469

 

Kihei Friday Town Party

January 23 Friday 6-9 pm

Every fourth Friday at the Azeka Shopping Center from 6-9 pm you will find food trucks, entertainment, crafters, children’s games and activities. And it’s free. (808) 870-0423.  I will be writing another blog post on this with more specific information.  Stay tuned.

 

Chinese New Year

February 20

Lahaina Town celebrates the lunar new year with a traditional lion dance, firecrackers and kung fu demonstration on the Baldwin Home Museum lawn at 5 pm. Exciting lion dancing will proceed along on Front Street, visiting merchants. Wo Hing Museum will host a FREE celebration from 5 pm to 9 pm with kids’ crafts, cultural demos and a presentation on the history of Chinese New Year. Chinese foods will be available for purchase. The lions will arrive at Wo Hing Museum at 9 pm for a grand finale dance, firecrackers and blessing of the temple on Front Street to ring in the Year of the Ram!

On February 21, the Chinese New year celebration continues – this time at Maui Mall in Kahului. The Maui Chinese New Year Festival features food, craft and cultural booths; Chinese cultural, calligraphy, childlren art contest from grades K to 8, cooking contest, live entertainment, martial arts demonstrations and good luck photos by Photography by Irvin Yamada with an ancient lion head from the Kwock Hing Society.
