Modern Luxury Comes to Maui with Makali’i at Wailea

Makali’i or in English the Pleiades star cluster with which the ancient Hawaiians used in navigation for their great open ocean voyages has now led you to a new way of living in Wailea. Makali’i at Wailea.  Located in the SW corner of Wailea above the Fairmont Kea Lani bordered above by the Wailea Blue Course and on the south with Makena. Makali’i is a residential complex and does not allow vacation rentals. It is designed for modern luxury living and built to maximize both views and comfort.

The design is not what you have become accustomed to as Hawaiian architecture.  Makali’i is modern, but in a classic Hawaiian style.  This style is called Mid-Century Modern so think more of the classic Frank Lloyd Wright designs of the 50’s.  Wide open flowing spaces, glass, natural air flows, high ceilings, sloping flat cooper roofs, polished metals, fine woods, simple yet elegant furnishings.   Now you get the picture!

Mid-Century Modern style evokes memories of Frank Lloyd Wright and the modern optimism of 50’s designs

Armstrong Development (Kai Malu, Keala o Wailea) and the Burrard Group have teamed up with Group 70 International Inc. of Honolulu as architects to create this exciting new project and is being marketed by the Wailea Group.  Individual units are entered via their own private open aired “ipe” wood decked courtyards.  Large glass doors open directly to the generous kitchen with the space flowing outward to the living room and through the glass sliding doors onto the large lanai.  Ceiling heights slope upward from 9’ at the entrance to a full 13’ culminating in a full glass wall facing the ocean views!

Makali’i at Wailea features 16 separate buildings of four units each for a total of only 68 homes.  There are two different designs in each structure all being 3 Bedrooms and 3 Baths of 1574sf (A&D units) and 1802sf (B&C units) of living area plus lanais.  Two buildings (#1, #11) have B&C units as 2 Bedroom, 2 Bath but still 1562 sf of living area. The Third bedroom for the B&C designs are a separate Casita with its own bath located above the carport and accessed directly from the entry courtyard (Buildings 1&11 do not have Casitas).  All the units have carport parking attached as part of the structure.  This is to promote the open air flow and feel of the overall design.  However, don’t be disappointed as these carports include full storage areas plus space for trash and storage bins.  The Residents Club also has purpose built storage for water sports equipment as well.

Makalii Site Plan

Common pathways and green areas are designed to promote walking inside Makali’i with the centerpiece being the 3000sf Residents Club which features expansive ocean views with a 100’ long horizonless pool with shallow area for placing lounge chairs in the water.  The men’s and women’s changing areas feature their own Steam Room, Sauna, Shower, Lockers and Restrooms.  There is a large BBQ area plus an Exercise Room with aerobic and weight equipment.  With only 67 other neighbors many of which will probably be part time don’t expect to wait for your favorite spot!  All this and you are just 200 yards Polo Beach!
